Can direction-sensitive headphone reproduction modify back-up alarms detectability in a laboratory experiment ?

Résumé

Reproducing binaural recordings using headphones is a technique widely used in sound quality studies. It allows a precise reproduction of sound stimuli to the ears of participants in a listening test experiment. A limitation of this technique is that sounds are not modified when the listener moves his head. This can lead to a certain lack of realism, as well as difficulties in detecting and locating sound sources in a complex auditory scene. Indeed, head movements provide useful cues for the listener in a real situation. Another technique consists in using High Order Ambisonics (HOA) recordings. These recordings are presented to listeners through headphones, using a set of binaural impulse responses in order to simulate the acoustic path between an array of loudspeakers surrounding the listener and the listener?s ears. Thanks to a head tracker fixed on the headphone, the auditory scene is modified according to the listener?s head movements in real time. This technique was used in a study to compare the detectability of two types of back-up alarms (tonal vs. broad band). Ambient noise has been recorded at a mining site in Quebec using an array of microphones and was reproduced by Wave-Field Synthesis in a room of the University of Sherbrooke. Several backup alarms were added, coming from different positions. This scene was recorded with a 3rd order HOA system (Zylia). These recordings are presented through headphones and used in a detection experiment. This experiment is repeated for the two types of alarms and in two conditions : with and without taking the subjects? head movements into account. Results will be presented during the conference and will allow to evaluate whether the use of head-tracking can increase the ability of listeners to detect the alarms in laboratory conditions.
