              <p>Chordophones making traditionally requires wooden materials, called tone woods. Numerous species are used, temperate as well as tropical species. Nowadays, the shortage of sufficiently large trees as well as the impact of climate change has led to current and future supply issues. The low-range and mid-range instruments, made in factories, use solid wood. This type of utilization is the most important in the field of instrument making, which can nowadays be considered as a non-sense, especially for instruments considered as consumables. Composite materials made with natural fibres have been extensively studied and used during the last decade. The bio-based composites associate highly renewable fibres and cores with thermosettable or thermoformable resins into materials with adjustable mechanical properties. Considering their mechanical properties, they are alleged to be used as a potential substitution to solid woods. In this study, numerical models of guitar plates are used to optimize the recipe of bio-based composites to copy the dynamic behaviour of solid woods, especially spruce, for a given geometry. In order to validate the process, the dynamics of the composite plates are measured and a finite element model updating method is performed to identify mechanical parameters that are compared to the ones of solid woods. The application is performed on OM shaped steel string guitar plates.</p>
