Uncovering the Meaning of Four Semantic Attributes of Sound : Bright, Rough, Round and Warm
Résumé
Previous studies have shown that bright (brillant), round (rond), warm (chaud) and rough (rugueux) are four terms vastly used in french language for sound description in sound creation processes such as music performance, orchestration, sound engineering or sound design. However, the meaning of those words is not homogeneously shared among sound experts depending on their professional activity and field of expertise (music rehearsal, sound mix, sound design ?). The intent of the present study is to obtain definitions and matching sound samples on those four terms as it is interpreted by different professionals. This study is organized around individual interviews with 32 sound professionals (musicians, composers, sound designers, acousticians?), during which they were asked to give definitions of the four terms and to discuss their opposite concepts. In order to create a link between definitions and sound features during the interviews, experts were also asked to choose sound samples from a musical instrument database to complete the definition of each word. The analysis of the interviews verbatims through qualitative analysis and standard NLP(Natural Language Processing) methods allows us to unravel the various sound description strategies performed by the different professionals and to finally build coherent definitions for the four terms. Lastly, by connecting the expression of these definitions to the chosen sound samples, it is possible to assess the plurality of the definitions among the experts, and to make a hypothesis of the acoustic correlates involved.
