Measurement of sound absorption with a dual-plane array of microphone by an optimization approach

Résumé

Standard sound absorption methods such as the impedance tube work very well but have the disadvantage of measuring only a small sample at normal incidence. The reverberation chamber method, which aims at measuring an average absorption coefficient under diffuse field incidence, is reputed for its non-physical results and severe non repeatability, especially at low frequency. Conventional methods for measuring sound absorption in situ are generally using very few microphones. These methods have inherited some of the previous shortcomings, while generating others. On the other hand, with the rise of low cost MEMS technology, it is now possible to create robust microphone arrays at an affordable cost. This has generated a renewed interest in microphone antennas to measure sound absorption. The final objective is to be able to measure absorption in situ, while overcoming the problems of standardized and conventional methods. Recent publications on the subject have focused on holographic approaches, or approximation of local plane waves. This presentation will explore a novel way to measure sound absorption. It relies on an optimization process based on a simplified model of point source propagation over an impedance plane. This method is studied for a double-layer, plane microphone array under various incidences. Simulations of the measurement method will be proposed and experimental results will also be presented. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of this new approach will be discussed.
