Business and Employment Cooperatives in France: When the Cause of Solo Self-Employed Testifies to Workers’ Creativity and Renewal of Mobilizations
Résumé
Since cooperatives first appeared in the 19th century, history has shown the diversity of this movement. This contribution highlights the role of Business and Employment Cooperatives (BEC) i.e. a peculiar kind of cooperative of solo self-employed workers.
They are one kind of self-employed workers communities that appeared, among guild-like groups, unions (e.g.: Freelancer’s Union in the USA), co-working spaces, peer support networks, supportive umbrellas for freelancers, and of course, own-account workers cooperatives, among which on can find the BECs. The way the latter organize themselves in a context of growing incentives to self-employment and decline of trade unions challenges the classical debate of continuity/renewal of workers’ collective action.
