Sedi del potere di un insediamento italico nell’appennino lucano : Torre di satriano in età arcaica

Résumé

The Italic settlement of Torre di Satriano has been the object of an interdisciplinary and integrated archaeological study since the year 2000 by the University of Matera, Graduate Department of Archaeology (Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia). The site’s settlement patterns, as a result of this research, are known from the Middle Bronze Age through the Post–Medieval period. In addition to a sanctuary from the Lucanian era, already published, and the excavations of the medieval remains on top of the hill of Torre di Satriano, research in recent years has concentrated on two exceptional complexes from the Archaic period. These complexes are the object of the present article. The first of these is an exceptionally large residence, rectangular in plan with an apse at one end, constructed using hut–like techniques and located on an ample plateau east of the highground occupied during the Middle Ages. This structure, built during the last quarter of the seventh century BC and destroyed shortly before the middle of the following century, was built on top of an older building. The latter can not be dated with precision at this point, even though much of the residual material is indicative of settlement already from the third quarter of the eighth century BC. The second structure, located near the northern slope of the hill, is an extraordinary complex, both in terms of its dimensions as well as for its construction techniques and the quality of the decorations. Realized around the middle of the sixth century BC, it is known at this point in the research for two principal phases before its destruction around 480 to 470 BC. Also noted are the areas annexed to it, in particular a burial ground and a workshop area. The article also presents the main elements of the architectural decoration – among which stand out the slabs of the frieze representing hoplites and horsemen – as well as the rich and articulated interior decoration, in primis the door to the central room preserved in situ with its bronze decorations. The article also presents a sample of the many ceramics made in Greece and Magna Graecia that recall the sumptuous ceremonies that characterized the life of the elites of ancient Greek society in their seats of power.
