"Jean-Baptiste Descamps et Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun : deux regards opposés sur le patrimoine"

Résumé

Jean-Baptiste Descamps and Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun: two contradictory concepts on heritage The travel book published by the painter Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1715-1791) in 1769 and entitled Voyage pittoresque de la Flandre et du Brabant is considered a major source for the art confiscations made in 1794-1795 by the French Revolutionary troops. This article shows that the book was indeed used by some of the French « commissaires des arts » and more especially by Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun (1748-1813) because of the rich documentation it gives on the localisation of the art works. This art dealer admired Descamps because they both shared the same love for Flemish and Netherlandish paintings. But above the factual, the article demonstrates that the two men were completely opposite on the question regarding the transfer of the art works exhibited in public places. Descamps was born in the Flemish city of Dunkerque and raised in Ieper and Antwerp before moving to France for economic reasons. This background explains why he considered the Flanders as his homeland and the paintings in the Flemish churches as the heritage and the richness of the Austrian Low Countries. For that reason, he clearly requested the municipal authorities to preserve the art works on their genuine locations. Twenty five years later, Lebrun defended the opposite idea and used Descamps’s book to organize the Revolutionary seizures in the Low Countries. Lebrun was a man of another time and he argued that the arts works from all Europe had to form a universal museum in Paris for the liberated people.
