Why translating Alcestis, an apparently marginal tragedy within the ancient corpus due to its happy ending and its lack of spectacular actions ? The idea of imago, deployed all along the critic paratext and the tragedy, describes both its tragic plot, understood as a substitution that ends with the return of the original, and the humanistic deed accomplished by Buchanan, faithful translator as much as Admetus is a faithful husband, and bridge between two different worlds and their values as much as Heracles between the living and the dead. Translating Alcestis becomes thus a sort of theatrical and ethic manifesto.
