Why is there no World Soul in Numenius’ dialogue On the Good ? The absence of identification of the “third” God to the World Soul in the Περὶ τἀγαθοῦ In his dialogue On the Good (19 F = fr. 11 dP), Numenius writes that the God who is “second and third is one”. Through this phrase, he designates a God with two aspects that correspond to the double direction of his attention. In the second one, he is turned towards the world and plays the role of a demiurge. According to most scholars, this demiurge could be identified with the World Soul, that the fragments we have of the dialogue do not mention. The paper shows that this interpretation may not take into account what Numenius actually says and highlights the theoretical and polemical reasons why, in fact, even if the demiurge acts as the World Soul, Numenius does not identify him with it. He wants to define the principles that he identifies with Being, conceived of as incorporeal. The innate movement of Soul and the immanence that characterizes it according to the Platonic tradition which he follows and according to the Stoic tradition he stands against, prevent the Soul from getting this status of pure intelligible. If Numénius granted it, he would yield to Stoic immanentism and corporealism. Finally, it appears that it is not useful either to identify the second aspect of the second God, designated as “third God” at one moment in the dialogue, with the third God Numenius reportedly identified with the world according to the testimony of Proclos (29 T = fr. 21 dP). This third God could really correspond to the world that Plato turns into a god, provided that this world is considered as the product of the intellect only, as the order (κόσμος) that certainly contains a soul, even its own intellect, but is reduced neither to the one nor to the other.
