EV Scale Up: from Product Modularity to Mobility Versatility

Résumé

Considering some strong evidences coming from the field, the EV scale up is happening right now. On the one side, we acknowledge that the observed EV industry is in a “statu quo” situation: despite some strong technological changes, all the main characteristics of the dominant design in terms of business models, industry architecture and product architecture are still preserved. On the other side, we wonder whether the adoption of electrification technologies bear some potential and underutilized intrinsic advantages versus ICEVs which may draw some disruption of the dominant design. We hypothesize that the application of the design strategy “product modularity to mobility versatility”, facilitated by the EV scale up, may induce such a disruption. This paper lays solid theoretical and empirical foundations for this hypothesis and proposes a research program integrating some innovative lines of research to assess how deeply the dominant design could be disrupted.
