Assessing sustainability of agricultural systems by multi-criteria approach:an overview
Résumé
The development of assessment method (AM) is considered by many stakeholders as a major step towards sustainability. Thus, the last decades have seen an explosion of AM publications using a plethora of indicators, more or less structured in a conceptual framework and at various levels of aggregation. We performed a unique review on 263 AM papers published between 1993 and 2019 and covering various agricultural systems. Most of AM consist in a non-aggregated list of indicators or are based on a sum of scores. Well-known multi-criteria approaches (e.g. MAUT) have been marginally used in sustainability science. Level of aggregation or transparency of weighting also differed between methods.
