Promotion of Cultural Heritage by Digital Technologies in Japan

Résumé

Lately, Japan has become more and more popular as a touristic destination. To satisfy the cultural thirst of this amount of Japanese and non-Japanese people, companies and municipal authorities have joined efforts to promote the cultural heritage of Japan, and especially its architectural heritage. In this respect, image, as a tool of communication that involves no words or languages, is a very powerfull and international asset. It takes many forms, such as fixed or animated, its making is plural and involves different techniques and methodologies such as 3D digitising, modelling, visual enrichment or hypothetical reconstruction and its publishing methods may as well be diverse with the very trending virtual reality, augmented reality or serious games and associated equipments such as fixed or mobile tablets, smartphones, head sets or smart glasses. Even though Japan has been long known for its advanced technology industry, it has been pointed out (Digital Cultural Revolution, Society for Digital Heritage, 2016) that Japan is quite late in the area of digital heritage compared to Europe, the US and even China and Korea. In this paper, we intend to study the promotion of Japanese architectural heritage via the digital technologies. Architecture, as a physical remnant of the past, embodies Japanese history and thus, its promotion represents a great issue in the touristic industry. By comparing significant Japanese and European projects, our objective is to understand the state of the digital heritage intended to promotion in Japan, as it is a trending and fast moving field.
