“Übersetzen s’ aus Frankreich a Stuk …”: Johann Nestroy ins Französische übersetzen und neu übersetzen
Résumé
On the basis of a comparison between the various recent translations of Nestroy's plays into French, this paper presents a critical examination of the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the different strategies adopted. Whatever method the translators or adapters adopt, they inevitably encounter the same difficulties, which may sometimes force them into free adaptation. Areas of difficulty include the wide range of linguistic registers deployed by Nestroy, reproduction of his wordplay and of the names of his characters, and the various musical numbers. In respect of the fidelity to the original to which the translator is bound to aspire and the greater liberties that the adapter can allow himself, the French versions have marked differences, which bear witness to the creativity of translators and adapters alike.
