This article claims that the emergence of digital technologies, although seemingly revolutionary, is in fact in keeping with a more ancient revolution, that of graphic technology of alphabetic writing. The Turing machine, a theoretical model that puts forth how a computer functions, can now be seen as the end product of a deep reflection on mankind’s relationship to their paper and pencil. By analyzing the historical conditions that allowed the advent of the field called “artificial intelligence”, this article proposes to outline a brief history of the instrumented reason to show that it is a necessary prerequisite to craft a critique of contemporary technoscientific reason.
