USING GRID ADAPTATION TO UNDERSTAND SHIP FLOW INSTABILITY
Résumé
This paper studies the apparition of unsteadiness when using adaptive refinement for the RANS simulations of the flows around two ships, which are generally thought to be steady. To this end, the flows are simulated with different combinations of unsteady or steady flow solvers, fine or coarse meshes, and full geometries or symmetry planes; also, the results are compared with simulations on fine non-adapted grids. These experiences show that the unsteadiness is related to the use of wall law boundary conditions. The grid adaptation itself does not introduce any perturbation.
