Cool-Spark plasma sintering: An opportunity for the development of molecular ceramics

Abstract

Cool Spark Plasma Sintering recently emerged as an efficient approach to sinter thermodynamically fragile materials. In the context of an exploratory study aiming at the identification of new fragile ferroic materials, high density ceramics (98% of theoretical density) of copper acetate diamine Cu(CH3COO)2·2NH3 were obtained. The stabilization of its tridimensional framework by weak H-bonding qualifies this compound as a molecular material and limits its thermodynamic stability. However Cool Spark Plasma Sintering enables its efficient densification, through stabilization 90 °C beyond its decomposition temperature. This constitutes the first report of the sintering of molecular polycrystal, i.e. first example of molecular ceramic.
