Preliminary results of Palaeolithic excavations to the digging of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal : the excavation of Havrincourt (Pas-de-Calais, France)

Résumé

During the works carried out prior to the digging of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, several investigatory operations were launched between 2008 and 2010 to evaluate Palaeolithic site presence. Nearly 80 kilometers of the 120 planned kilometres were examined, which involved by INRAP more than 400 “archeological pit” in four Départements: Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme and Oise. Two Palaeolithic sites have been already excavated. These two sites located in the same village (Havrincourt, Pas-de-Calais), 400 meters from one another. Several occupations attributed to the most part to the Middle Pleniglacial Weichselian (OIS 4 / OIS 3) dated to the end of the Middle Palaeolithic. Also, unique evidence of Neanderthals was found. These two excavations allowed to excavate around 5,000 sq m (1500 sq m for the first excavation and 3500 sq m for the second digging). Discoveries and excavations at the Havrincourt site contribute to a better understanding of the territorial organisation of human Palaeolithic groups. Observations made at Havrincourt, along with local and regional discoveries, provide us a better knowledge of a sparsely documented period in North Western Europe. In this communication, we will present the preliminary results obtained from these first Palaeolithic excavations on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal.
