Miniaturizing the free acidity measurements for uranium (VI)-HNO3 solutions development of a sustainable radio-analytical chemistry through sequential injection analysis

Résumé

Automation and miniaturization of reagent based assays have transformed the traditional beaker chemistry from a labour intensive and time consuming task, into stand-alone microanalysis systems that are one step closer to real-time monitoring of industrial processes1. However, this trend in the nuclear industry has been hindered by the need of robust, reliable and long-lasting equipment to guaranty valuable analysis of radiation-emitting samples2. Nevertheless, recent automated devices like sequential injection analysis systems could be readily used as a promising solution to minimize the radiation exposure time and radioactive volume to be handled. Therefore, this work was focused on the miniaturization of the free acidity measurement in solutions containing uranium (VI), which is a common routine analysis done in nuclear reprocessing facilities3. The developed analytical method was coupled to an on-line spectroscopic detection and is to our knowledge, the first application of a SIA system for free acidity determination. Compared to the classic wet chemistry method, the newly developed SIA method reduces thousand fold the required sample volume, forty times the nuclear waste per analysis as well as the analysis time by eight fold. The developed application is therefore a good example of how recent developments in analytical sciences could be used as elements to improve the safety and operability of nuclear-related processes while in the same time reducing their environmental impact.
