Monastic life and "true felicity" in XVth century Tuscany. About a correspondence between two monks of San Miniato and a cleric from Arezzo
Vita monastica e ‘vera felicità’ nella Toscana del Quattrocento. A proposito di uno scambio epistolare fra due monaci di San Miniato e un chierico aretino
Résumé
The paper is based on the analysis of an epistolary exchange on the best kind of life (published in the appendix), between two Olivetan monks of San Miniato and a cleric from Arezzo, to whom the humanist monk Girolamo Aliotti lent his literary skills. After describing the nature and actors of the exchange, now preserved in Aliotti’s epistolary, it is then contextualized in the debates on the sancta rusticitas and finally confronted with the developments on the regular reform brought about in the inaugural speeches of the general chapters of the Olivetan Order, exceptionally preserved in Monte Oliveto Maggiore
