Understanding the behavior of fine particles at the tire/road interface

Résumé

This paper presents a laboratory study using SEM observations to provide new insights into the behavior of fine particles at the tire/road interface. Research methodology is inspired by the concept of tribological circuit. Particles are collected and separated into four fractions of size. Friction tests are performed. Test protocol allows following variation of friction coefficient with quantity of particles on test surface and collecting particles ejected from the surface. SEM observations at different contamination phases highlight different mechanisms like coverage of the surface by particles, trapping of particles by surface voids and ejection of particles from the tire/road contact area. A model is developed to quantify particles' flows. Relationship between the model parameters and observed particles' flows is established.
