Developing a chrono-systemic timeline tool to co-construct, analyze and communicate on the socio-ecological trajectory of the French Rhône River

Résumé

Developing online services for data access, visualization and analysis are an essential component of current research in environmental science, especially to promote interdisciplinary research and to transfer scientific knowledge to decision makers. Such approach has been adopted in the “Rhône Valley” Human-Environment Observatory, a scientific platform focused on the socio-ecological functioning of the French Rhône River. Since 2010, a Research Data Infrastructure (RDI) has been implemented, including web GIS, metadata catalog and photo library, which strengthened the interactions between scientists and river managers. The aim of this presentation is to describe a new tool in development within the RDI in order to analyze and communicate on the complex socio-ecological trajectory of the Rhône river. We are building a chrono-systemic timeline that synthetizes the significant events within the spatio-temporal trajectory of different compartments of the highly anthropogenic fluvial corridor. Event data are categorized (e.g., socio-economic context, legislation, hydro-climatic events, river restoration…) as well as the evolutionary trends of research topics (e.g., biological patterns, morphological patterns, media and discourse patterns…). We consider the chrono-systemic timeline as a communication tool for river managers, and a working tool for researchers that will foster interdisciplinary approaches and possibly raise new scientific issues in terms of causal relationships and drivers of change. Three participative workshops were held in 2018 and 2019, gathering scientists and river managers. Expert inputs improved the structure and contents of the timeline, and permitted to specify the user’s expectations. The challenge now lies on developing an online, interactive and evolving tool, so that the user can handle the timeline to respond to a specific question by exploring the causality links between spatio-temporal events and/or evolutionary patterns with editing tools. Promising solutions based on multiple coordinated-view geo-visualization interfaces have been identified. This presentation describes the timeline construction steps, highlights conceptual and methodological constraints, and discusses the concrete implementation of a timeline tool for the Rhône Observatory.
