Making River-Sea Systems work

Résumé

Typical environmental challenges of the twenty-first century are characterized by systemic causes, interlinked sources of stressors and a global character. Preservation of river-sea systems (RSS) is a typical example of complex issues combining the need for ecosystem protection with human ecosystem service demands for societal wellbeing. River-sea systems in Europe are among the most impacted globally, after centuries of industrialisation, urbanisation and agricultural intensification. Research efforts addressing these problems in RSS –including the transitional zone between freshwaters and the marine environment– have been largely discipline-specific and have not addressed the system as a whole. Translating current knowledge on RSS into science-based decisions capable of making RSS work requires the definition of a shared scientific agenda identifying the most overarching research questions, data sharing, instrumented and monitored study areas and a set of common procedures to ensure consistency of scientific outputs and decision making. This contribution shows how the creation of a research infrastructure dedicated to supporting interdisciplinary studies on RSS will be the best option to address all these challenges at a European scale. Based on the current experience of the DANUBIUS-PP consortium, the present contribution details the ideal features and mode of functioning of such infrastructure along with the potential benefits it will be able to deliver.
