"To 'Tune in' to the Human Tradition" Louis Zukofsky's Homophonic Practice

Résumé

When Louis Zukofsky began resorting to what is now identified as homophonic translation, it didn’t exist as such—Zukofsky variously spoke of homonyms, imitation of sound, or transliteration, when he singled out the practice at all. In fact, Zukofsky is often listed, together with Howard Chace (Anguish Languish, 1956) or Luis van Rooten (Mots D'Heures: Gousses, Rames, 1967), among those who helped establish the practice in the 1950s and 1960s. But unlike Chace or van Rooten who were passionate amateurs, Zukofsky devoted his life to writing, and homophonic translation was not a singular obsession but only one among several techniques he used. I therefore propose to insist on the appearance and evolution of Zukofsky’s transliteration practice and to bring out the coherence of the homophonic method with the rest of his poetics. Besides contributing to the genealogy of the practice, this approach may help define homophonic translation by contiguity.
