CHINA'S OFFENSIVE IN EUROPE : Chapter One

Résumé

For decades Chinese companies focused their global efforts on unearthing natural resources in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. But in recent years, Chinese money has been pouring out across the globe through diverse investments in real estate, energy, hospitality, and transportation, among others. Chinese investment in offshore mergers and acquisitions has already reached 101 billion dollars this year, almost as much as the 109 billion dollars total for all of 2015. Just recently, two massive deals made headlines: Anbang's 14 billion dollars bid for the U.S.-based Starwood Hotels, and ChemChina's 43 billion dollars takeover of European agro-business group Syngenta. Although the first bid failed, what do these undertakings reveal about China’s intentions in the West? What are the implications for the global economic order? How is China’s image being shaped by its muscular international investments? Should the West respond to this new wave, and if so, how?
