Graphemics in the 21st Century 2018. Proceedings

This volume of Proceedings incorporates selected papers presented at the Graphemics in the 21st Century Conference, which was held in Brest (France) from June 13 to June 15, 2018. This interdisciplinary conference brought together researchers from various disciplines who are interested in the topic of writing, including linguists, computer scientists, typographers, font designers, psychologists, archeologists, educators, etc. The topics range from gender-neutral writing (écriture inclusive, binnen-I) to emojis, Unicode encoding, the structure of Chinese characters, the morphology of Japanese kanjis, the origin of the Arabic script, the creation of alphabets for the languages of Papua New Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire, the unsuccessful 1971 reform of the Malayalam script, the extraction of linguistic information from keyboarding speed, the use of spectral decomposition for consonant/vowel classification without any linguistic information, and many more topics.
