The use of Human Orrery in teacher training, how to introduce pre-service teachers to mathematics and science subjects by using a HO in primary classes

Résumé

We present here a training program for prospective primary teachers (PPT) based on a pedagogical astronomical tool: Human Orrery (HO). A HO integrates people directly into the experience of orbiting planets by experiencing the movements of planets around the sun through their bodies and their movements. It unifies aspects of physics and mathematics subjects standing thus as an interdisciplinary tool for education. The training program aimed first at making PPT familiar with astronomy aspects that they will have later to teach in their classes and second to go beyond simple front teaching by making their own actions central to the demonstration. The program runs for five 3-hours modules in teacher training institute and afterwards for a one-day work and observation in primary schools with pupils aged 8-10 years. The pupils were introduced to astronomy concepts by their teachers during the two preceding months. The PPT, one group per class, had to implement an activity they had designed within the academic modules. Each activity was conceived into two phases using HO in the courtyard and a printed version of the HO in the classroom. Connection between meso-space and micro-space had thus to be considered. The PPT recorded the implementations and used these records in a reflective practice session at the afternoon. We will present the design of the training program, the content of the implemented activities, the observations of the PPT and our own feedback on the program.
