ECQVIS en latin classique
Résumé
The purpose of this contribution is to identify the different categories of uses of the interrogative compound ECQV- in literary texts written between 100 BC and the death of Augustus (14 AD). In contrast to ancient Latin, classical Latin displays a proliferation of rhetorical uses of ECQVIS. In this wide range of indirect speech acts with various argumentative orientations, I will investigate the occurrences of ECQV- in poetry as well as prose texts in order to compare their distribution with the general trends of use noted in Cicero’s multi-genre work. A particular point of interest will be the constrained use made of ECQVID as an adverb in the whole corpus. Independently of considerations of literary genre and particular author style, the absence of ECQVID used as an adverb in rhetorical questions pragmatically oriented towards a negative assertion can be seen as evidence of a diachronic linguistic change through grammaticalization.
