<p>Arnulf’s commentary on the Metamorphoses of Ovid, which also comprised an accessus and above all the Allegorie super Ovidii Metamorphosin, provides a vast panorama of didactic interpretation, following a code sometimes courtly, sometimes religious, but wherein the essential viewpoint concerns a moral reading of mythological stories. The manuscript tradition of these texts, either copied by themselves as a sort of compendium or in the margins of the Ovidian text, and most often transmitted with another commentary, that of John of Garland, is complex and reveals the importance of the work of the copyists. In this type of school commentary, the copyist is more than a simple scribe: he takes the initiative, he decides to dismember the earlier text and suggests other associations. Side-by-side with Ovid the author, and Arnulf the grammaticus or commentator (or glossator), one must also consider the presence of a third person, an anonymous figure, and yet one who is essential, the copyist.</p>
