Ferroelectric twisted liquid crystal structure

We propose here a new model of molecular distribution in a ferroelectric twisted liquid crystal sample. Whereas Pavel and Patel asserted that the electric field was homogeneous within the bulk, we have rather assumed than the high spontaneous polarisation of the SmC* phase induces a local polarisation charge in space, which destroys the homogeneity of the electric field in the sample. Optical measurements on two samples of different thicknesses namely, 2 and 4μm, have been carried out, showing agreement with this model.
