Combining tree-ring growth disturbances, meteorological reanalysis and historical documents to assess recent violent windy storms in Western France

Résumé

This research documents past storm impacts on coastal environments. The comparison of tree growth disturbance chronologies with meteorological reanalyses and historical database assesses past strong wind impacts in Western France. Wind perturbations are first extracted throughout tree-ring width (TRW) disproportions of trunk radii from a Pinus pinaster stand sampled on a coastal dune. The growth evolution rate identifies perturbed vegetative seasons. The meteorological HOMERE database enables to reconstruct wind conditions over recent years. It provides hourly mean wind directions and speeds, attesting numerous wind related disturbances that are observed within tree-ring patterns. To confirm their stormy origin, wind disturbances dated with tree-rings are then compared with an accurate storm chronology compiled from written sources. Historical documents, mainly newspaper sources, offer an accurate and exhaustive record of each event within a precise temporal and spatial frame. These descriptive data are useful to estimate the intensity of recent events. From this combined sequence ranging from 1955 to 2016, nineteen impacted winters are highlighted on the Pen Bron dune stand in La Turballe. Nine major storm seasons are detected with the crossing of three data sources, offering an accurate storm intensity indication. These results will be compared with a second study located at La Pointe d'Arcay dune in La-Faute-sur-Mer. The relevance of the TRW analyses using historical and meteorological data to document half a century of past storms is discussed, including its benefits and limitations. The availability of these data remains crucial, attesting the reliability of tree-ring research to document storm events.
