Abstract

Pondicherry region has faced rapid changes in land and water uses that may be accentuated by global climate changes. The objective of this project was to design and evaluate different scenarios for agriculture and water in the Pondicherry region. First, data has been collected with an integrated approach on land, agriculture and water in the Pondicherry district of Puducherry UT and Villupuram, Vanur and Cuddalore Taluks in Tamil Nadu (Department’s data, census, etc). This first phase enlightened the trends and also the limits of the data available. Based on data available we drafted 3 qualitative scenarios. They were used to discuss with administrators, NGOs and farmers’ representatives about the possible futures and sustainable planning. The report presents the trends identified, the scenarios and the results of the discussions.
