Typesetting the Holy Qur'ān with TeX

Résumé

Al Amal is a typesetting system for languages using the Arabic alphabet (Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Ottoman Turkish), integrated in the TeX typesetting environment. Based on a dual approach, it is suitable both for modern as for classical fully diacriticized text. The Naskhi typeface included in Al Amal has been designed with the METAFONT programming language and features more than a thousand ligatures and variant character forms. In this paper, after introductory sections to TeX and METAFONT, and a review of the traditional typographical rules of the Naskhi script as performed by Al Amal, we describe features concerning the typesetting of the Holy Qur'ān
