Seismic analysis of masonry structures based on NSCD method

Fabien Cherblanc

Résumé

Discrete element modelling (DEM) approach has already shown its efficiency to analyze the seismic behavior of masonry structures. However, since physical phenomena are lumped in the joint at the contact scale, the definition of an appropriate contact law is still a challenging task. Using DEM simulation, 2 strategies are available, either based on an explicit or implicit time integration. An alternative is to rely on the stability and efficiency of the NSCD approach while introducing a visco-elastic contact law to be able to describe vibratory phenomena. Unlike the explicit DEM formulation, this allows decoupling the physical definition of the contact law from numerical constraints. This case study presents a 2D seismic analysis of the Thoronet abbey, a major piece of built heritage. Dynamic mechanical simulations are performed using the open numerical platform LMGC90. In the framework of Eurocodes 8, numerical results highlight the influence of local contact law characteristics on the global stability of this structure.
