            <abstract xml:lang="en">
              <p>Several control architectures have been proposed for smart grids based on centralized, decentralized or hybrid models. This chapter describes the Secure Overlay Communications and Control Model, a peer-to-peer, decentralized control and communications model with its own communications protocols and intrusion detection mechanisms that integrate a physical power system and its communications and control systems. This chapter also demonstrates how the model can help mitigate cyber attacks on a power system.</p>
