Digital Materiality: an experiment with smart concrete

Résumé

The increasing use of information technology is transforming our design methods, fabrication processes and perception of the architectural space. The hybridisation of modelling tools, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping machines, the integration of communicating devices and the emergence of smart materials, the use and the expanding of an augmented space are all contributing elements that are leading to the emergence of a digital materiality. We will tackle the question of digital materiality design and we will seek to categorize some of these issues through a multidisciplinary experiment. The notion of digital materiality is defined as the articulation of four contemporary phenomenas; the fabrication conception continuum, the use of instrumented materials, the emergence of new perceptive entities and the widespread concept of augmented space
