Femininity and Masculinity in Flores och Blanzeflor

Virgile Reiter

Résumé

This essay aims to explore the representation of masculinity and femininity in Flores och Blanzeflor, a fourteenth-century Swedish adaptation of the popular roman idyllique Floire et Blanchefleur, and to discuss how the gender roles they reveal can be related to the context in which the romance was written. Flores och Blanzeflor presents a strong segregation of gender, in which women are limited to the domestic and spiritual sphere and are punished for trying to transgress social boundaries, while men are free to roam the world, to engage in politics and even to question social order in the name of justice. The women of the romance, however, are able to develop strategies that allow them to safely influence important decisions made by the men close to them. The essay discusses the extent to which these strategies can be read as traces of a feminine voice shaping the translation of the text and suggests that this voice may be that of Eufemia, Queen of Norway, presenting a model of womanly conduct to her soon- to-be-married daughter, Ingeborg.
