The 2018 Climate Informatics Hackathon: Hurricane Intensity Forecast

Abstract

The 2018 Climate Informatics hackathon focused on forecasting the hurricane intensities, and there was 35 participants. Specifically, the goal was to predict the intensity of tropical and extra-tropical storms (24h forecast) using information from past storms since 1979. The contest, dataset, methods, participants, successes, and challenges are discussed. The codes made to run the hackathon are freely available on the RAMP studio platform: www.github.com/ramp-kits/storm forecast/.
