Role of peripheral vision on proactive processing leading to object recognition

Proactive models of visual perception propose that the rapid processing of low spatial frequencies (LSF) through the magnocellular pathways may guide the subsequent processing of high spatial frequencies (HSF) which are conveyed more slowly through the parvocellular pathways. These models have mostly been tested in central vision. Yet, the density of retinal ganglion cells sensitive to HSF is greatest in the fovea while the density of retinal ganglion cells sensitive to LSF increases with eccentricity. Therefore, proactive models of visual perception should be constrained by the anatomical and functional properties of the central and peripheral retina. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that the visual system uses contextual information in peripheral vision, dominated by LSF, to generate predictions about the visual input, and then uses these predictions to guide local object recognition. Large real-world scenes with semantically congruent and incongruent object were presented, and participants had to categorize objects (animal vs. furniture). We measured the peripheral interference (PI) effect, i.e. difference in performance between incongruent and congruent trials. In a first experiment, objects were systematically presented in central vision, and we manipulated the pre-exposure of peripheral/scene information (150 ms, 30 ms or simultaneously). Results showed a PI effect only when the scene was presented 150 ms before the object. In a second experiment, fixing the pre-exposure at 150 ms, we manipulated the visual field of presentation of objects (left, right or central). Results showed that the PI effect was stronger in the left visual field, compared to the right or the central visual field. The study suggests that contextual information in peripheral vision, when sufficiently processed, can be used to generate predictions about the category of small objects in the scene. In addition, the right hemisphere may be particularly involved in the generation of predictions.
