As for the amphitheatres of Arles and Nîmes or as the theatres of Apt and Orange, the theatre of Aix-en-Provence was covered by buildings as soon as the late Antiquity (5th c. AD) and dwellings maintained until the middle 14th c.; near 7 m in depth of sedimentation were entrapped inside the cavea and give evidence of a long unknown period of the history of the town.
