Résumé
This article proposes associating the tools of ethnography with the critique of historical sources. Based on a comparison of two studies using “private” archives, we highlight the value of inserting the archival encounter into the material and social conditions of possibility. Re-examining how the studies unfolded, the properties of the actors (archivists and researchers alike), and the collection of archival holdings, this article introduces the reflexive endeavor into the ordinary work of historian. Far from the passive role generally attributed to archival researchers, they are full-fledged actors in the studies they conduct.
L’article se propose d’associer les outils de la démarche ethnographique à la critique des sources historiques. À partir de la comparaison de deux enquêtes dans des centres d’archives dits « privés », on souligne l’intérêt de réinscrire la rencontre archivistique dans ses conditions matérielles et sociales de possibilité. Réinterrogeant le déroulé de l’enquête, les propriétés des acteurs (archivistes et enquêteurs), ainsi que la constitution des fonds, cette contribution intègre la démarche réflexive au travail ordinaire de l’historien. Loin du rôle passif qui lui est généralement prêté, le chercheur consultant des archives est un acteur à part entière de l’enquête.
