Tone Reservation Based Gaussian Clipping andFiltering for OFDM PAPR Mitigation

Résumé

In this paper, a new Tone Reservation (TR) method to decrease the OFDM Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) is described. The proposed TR method is based on a new Clipping Function: the Gaussian function to generate the signal which will be inserted on the reserved tones. The advantages of this approach is twofold: First, the Gaussian clipping function is a smoth non-linear function which keeps constant the average power of the signal; a characteristic of great importance in real transmission. Second, the Tone Reservation filtering by putting the corrected signal on reserved carriers guarantees a complete backward compatibility with legacy receivers. The filtering is performed in frequency domain by inserting the corrected signal on free or unused subcarriers of the considered standard (e.g. the WLAN-based IEEE 802.11 a/g standards). Furthermore, our approach does not need any side information. In addition to the previous advantages, the simulations show very interesting performance in terms of the trade-off between complexity and PAPR reduction, when compared to others TR methods.
