Application of time reversal to power line communications for the mitigation of electromagnetic radiation

Résumé

This chapter focuses on the issue of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for power line communication (PLC) systems. The PLC technology is typically used in the indoor environment over the low‐voltage (LV) infrastructure. The PLC technology uses a transmission medium consisting of copper wires, connectors, and electrical equipment: outlets, switches, circuit breakers. When the frequency of the transmitted signal increases up to the high‐frequency (HF) band, these elements lead to a strong attenuation. The chapter investigates the signal processing technique of time reversal (TR), initially developed in the acoustic domain and then further extends to the field of electromagnetic propagation. This technique consists of pre‐filtering the transmitted signal using a filter adapted to the transmission channel. The potential of TR to handle EMC issues for PLC systems. The chapter assesses the performance of the TR technique for the mitigation of the electromagnetic interference (EMI).
