Abstract

1. LEXICAL POLYSEMY EXPLORED ALONG A SET OF SYNONYMY LINKS (bizarre)
In Bruno Gaume's (IRIT, Toulouse) PROXEMIC modelization, the polysemy of the French adj. bizarre is represented by a lattice of synonymy links consisting of three clusters. At the center of the middle cluster (in red) extravagant and at some ends comique, ridicule and fantaisiste,
At the center of the bottom cluster (in green) fou and at its main end piqué, timbre, cinglé.

2. COMPARING THE POLYSEMY OF Fr. étrange AND bizarre WITH THE DICTIONNAIRE ÉLECTRONIQUE DES SYNONYMES (Caen, CRISCO)
The following schema merges two 2-dimensional representations of the semantic spaces of the adj., étrange (left); of the adj.,bizarre (right) and one 3-dimensional representation of the merged semantic space of both adjectives (middle). In the spaceof étrange, bizarre appears near the center, whereas in that of bizarre, étrange appears off-center on the right together withsingulier, incroyable and étonnant. In the 3D-representation the yellow spots represent the peculiar synonyms of bizarre; thepink ones, those of étrange; and the blue ones, the synonyms shared by both adjectives.
In the 3D-representation the yellow spots represent the peculiar synonyms of bizarre; the pink ones, those of étrange; and the blue ones, the synonyms shared by both adjectives. At the left-middle interface the four distant yellow spots point to the right area of the 2D-representation of étrange, that of mystery. At the top right-middle interface the distant pink spots point to the area of fantasy of the 2D-representation of bizarre. At the bottom, the distant pink spots point to the area of madness.
