About the funerary landscapes of Magna Graecia. An archaeological approach

When they left their city and crossed the necropolises, what landscape did the inhabitants of Magna Graecia see? This article presents a methodology for analyzing the funerary spaces in their entirety and thus addressing individual graves in their context, through different approaches: study of ancient sources, plans and topography, focus on surface material and structures not strictly funerary, inventory of the relevant material... Combined with a study of tomb markers and of the objectives of those who install them, this systematic approach of the documentation suggests in fine an evocative reconstruction of the Italian funerary landscapes of the 5th-3rd centuries BC.
Lorsqu’ils sortaient de leur cité et traversaient les nécropoles, quel paysage s’offrait aux yeux des habitants de Grande Grèce ? Cet article présente une méthodologie pour analyser les espaces funéraires dans leur globalité et ainsi aborder les tombes individuelles dans leur contexte : étude des sources antiques, des plans et de la topographie, attention au matériel de surface et aux structures non strictement funéraires, recensement du matériel pertinent… Combiné à une étude des marqueurs de tombes et des objectifs de leurs commanditaires, cette approche systématique de la documentation permet in fine de proposer une reconstitution évocatrice des paysages funéraires italiotes des Vème-IIIème siècles avant J.-C.
Quando uscivano della città ed attraversavano le necropoli, quale paesaggio appariva agli occhi degli abitanti della Magna Grecia? Quest’articolo propone impostare una metodologia per l’analisi delle aree funerarie affinché le singole sepolture possano essere studiate nel loro contesto specifico: studio dei testi antichi, delle piante anzi che della topografia, valutazione del materiale di superficie e delle strutture archeologiche, non solamente funerarie, censimento del materiale pertinente ad ogni sepoltura, etc. Insieme allo studio dei segnacoli di tombe anzi che dell'intenzione degli committenti, l'indagine sistematica della documentazione offre la possibilità di ricostruire i paesaggi funerari dei secoli V-III a. C.
