Future and indeterminateness
Résumé
In this talk I present a non-quantificational, temporal analysis of the "will" future in a Branching Time framework, designed to capture indeterminateness. On this analysis "will" is not inherently modal, and the modality of the future is due to the plurality of possible world-histories against which “will”-sentences are evaluated -- a sort of modality qualified as “indeterminateness-based”. After a proposal in Del Prete (2014), the pattern of interaction of "will" with negation and indefinite NPs is explained by assuming a homogeneity condition known to hold of plural predications (Križ, 2015: Aspects of Homogeneity in the Semantics of Natural Language. PhD thesis, University of Vienna).
