De quoi le Cusain et le Nolain sont-ils le nom ?

Abstract

The relation between Nicholas of Kues and Giordano Bruno deals with the old question about the beginning of modernity. According to Blumenberg, they belong to the same historical age, they make the same kind of questions and they try to answer to the same kind of problems. Nonetheless, they seem to give very different answers. Even if something must have happened, and a threshold has probably been crossed, there is an invisible limit rather than a breaking off of the epoch. With the notion of “threshold”, then, Blumenberg gives us the image of the possible coexistence of two different epochs. In this way, Nicholas of Kues and Giordano Bruno become themselves the symbol of the impossibility of conceiving history in terms of “epochs” and, consequently, of interpreting modernity in this way.
