Morphology-dependent resonances and/or whispering gallery modes for a two-dimensional dielectric cavity with an eccentrically located circular inclusion, a Hamiltonian point of view with Hamiltonian (optical) chaos

Abstract

The theory of interaction between an arbitrary electromagnetic shaped beam and a sphere with an eccentrically located spherical inclusion has been recently built. We focus our interest on the fields inside the main sphere in the geometrical optics (equivalently Hamiltonian mechanical) approximation, and investigate periodic orbits inside the annular space formed by the main sphere and the inclusion. Inclusion-touching periodic orbits may be unstable hypo-resonances generating a chaotic behavior or stable hyper-resonances. Hyper-resonances are morphology-dependent resonances (MDRs) which do not identify with whispering gallery modes (WGMs).
