The paper deals with the influence of the cooling conditions of an iron-cobalt alloy on its magnetostrictive behavior. Low magnetostriction is sought. This is achieved during heat treatment which develops a uniaxial anisotropy leading to a bi-domain structure. This treatment is followed by slow cooling. Cooling a hundred times faster results in a significant increase of magnetostriction. X-ray diffraction measurements make it possible to evaluate the level of associated residual stresses. The introduction of this mechanical state in a two-phase magneto-mechanical coupling model allows to reconstruct the observed behavior.
