Comparison between two sensing technologies based on Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers: Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry and Tunable Wavelength Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

We compare the performances of two architectures of fiber-based sensors using the Rayleigh scattering in silica to monitor temperature and strain along an optical fiber:Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) and Tunable Wavelength Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (TW-COTDR). In this abstract, we show that the temperature and strain measurements obtained with these two techniques are comparable, even if distributed sensing performances differ between technologies. At the conference, the evolution of their performances when the
sensing fiber is exposed to X-rays will be discussed.
