Rime priming effect in auditory word recognition: Does orthographic overlap increase the facilitation?
Résumé
In this chapter, we investigate the phonological priming facilitation in auditory word recognition when primes and targets overlap on the rime (TOILE /twal/ - VOILE /vwal/). After a brief survey of the literature, we present two experiments examining the modulation by orthographic knowledge of the rime-priming effect. The influence of two types of primes was compared. Both shared the phonological rime with the targets but only one shared the orthographic rime with the targets (TOILE /twal/ - VOILE /vwal/ vs. MOELLE /mwal/-VOILE /vwal/). The results showed that the orthographic overlap did not increase the magnitude of the facilitation effect, neither in a standard shadowing task (Experiment 1) nor when participants had to repeat the targets only if they shared the rime with the primes (Experiment 2). The involvement of orthographic representations during auditory word recognition at a pre-lexical stage of processing is discussed.
